Abstract
Development and problems of modernization of peripheral societies of European civilization are considered in the paper. It is argued that recent enlargement of the European Union has left three Eastern European countries – Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine in a specific zone that can be defined as Eastern European borderland. The difference in developmental tracks of European societies has been demonstrated and it is suggested that successful development of peripheral societies in Central and Eastern Europe is possible by means of European integration.
