Abstract

The Scholar Ship (TSS) is an innovative venture in higher education. Its goal is to enhance intercultural contact, communication and competence by exposing college students to an intensive international educational experience. TSS accomplishes this goal by constructing a higher education institution in an ocean liner; drawing students, faculty and administrators from all over the world, and then journeying for entire semesters to a series of international ports of call. Thus, TSS provides its students with a rich and edifying international experience simply by giving them an opportunity to live aboard a ship among such a varied complement of passengers. TSS further enhances its students’ international education by making a significant effort to equip students with the essential intercultural competencies (Schröer, 2009) to travel safely and successfully in the many different countries that were part of the TSS itinerary.
