Abstract
The main objective of this research paper and its corresponding analysis is to explore and discuss the contribution of the banana export sector to the growth of the Cameroon economy. The paper presents and utilizes data for the period 2002-2012, collected from the Food and Agricultural Organization's Banana Review & Market Statistics Paper (FAOSTAT) and the World Integrated Trade Solution (WITS) Database. Using a qualitative analytical approach and the WITS model, the findings of the research demonstrate that the exportation of banana as a major cash crop and or agricultural product in Cameroon, has positive significant contribution to economic growth. Besides, the study further revealed that improving upon the precarious economic and institutional wellbeing of small scale banana producers and export sector, will increase the productivity base and quality of banana exports, which will consequently affect economic growth and trade. Based on this findings, it is recommended that the volume, productivity and quality of banana exports be increased; and small scale producers of banana exports be integrated in policy making and development of this agricultural sector so as to achieve higher economic growth rates in Cameroon.
