Abstract

A forceful notion for ASEAN integration emerged over decades. This was the Principle of Open Regionalism, which was first noted in the preamble of the Bangkok Declaration, reappeared in the ASEAN instruments, and gained much significance when it was reiterated in the APEC ministerial meetings in the late C20. This Principle has influenced some aspects of the functioning of the ASEAN regional integration, including enabling inflows of economic factors into the ASEAN, allowing both the ASEAN and Member States to establish external relationships and adopt external rules and regulations to promote order within the region. Although the integration of these aspects has affected both the economic and non-economic legal order of the ASEAN Community, the focus of this paper is the economic legal order.
