Abstract
In 2014, India surpassed Brazil and Australia to become the largest bovine meat exporting country in the world. This paper tries to find the reasons that led to this spurt in exports of bovine meat from India. The paper first uses a gravity model approach to understand how and what factors have led India to be the leader in bovine export market during the recent few years. Then it analyzes the five top importing countries to understand how changes in these countries have contributed in favor of India. This paper also finds out that a mix of domestic conducive policies, as well as the restrictive policies of importing nations towards other exporters have been the reasons for this outcome. Also a preference for protein rich diet in South-East Asian countries have coincided with the above mentioned factors. Finally, the paper also discusses the major issues which needs to be addressed in order to sustain the position as a leader in world bovine export market.
