Abstract

The most well-rehearsed explanations for urban riots (i.e., that they crystalize popular rage about poverty, inequality, or lack of economic opportunity) are incomplete because the supposed causative factors are constants whereas riots are episodic events. This paper seeks an economic explanation for rioting, explaining each stage of the riot.
