Abstract

Racialized lawyers in Ontario have long complained about barriers to practice and widespread discrimination in the bar. The ever increasing diversity in the Province makes the near-total exclusion of racialized lawyers from decision-making positions in the legal community and law firms unconscionable. The Law Society of Upper Canada has enacted reforms to the Rules of Professional Conduct, which will have broad implications for law firms in Ontario. Astute firms will get ahead of these trends by properly investing in the recruitment and retention of diverse lawyers into their practices.
