Abstract

Some 400 million Indians – nearly a third of India’s population – have never used electric light bulbs in their homes. Over two-thirds of the population are exposed to intense indoor air pollution caused by burning biomass in inefficient cooking devices that add to India’s carbon footprint. The paper makes a comparative study of the use of solar energy in the Indian state of Karnataka, which is one of the country’s foremost industrial zones and attracts the best industries. In a worldwide perspective of installed solar power capacity India compares extremely poorly in comparison to other nations and it is only if industrialized states like Karnataka take a strong position that India can hope to do better as a provider of clean energy in terms of harnessing the sun's energy. Clean, renewable energy is of utmost importance because of the concern about India’s rising carbon footprint and the impact on the economy due to fluctuating prices of fossil fuels.
