Abstract
This study provides descriptive research that explores the phenomena of similarities of older and young entrepreneurs who have been largely ignored in entrepreneurial research. Based on the 2003 National Survey of Small Business Finances conducted every five years by the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors, the data were collected and compiled from June 2004 and March 2005. Selected from the Dun and Bradstreet master file, firms that were at least five years old and managed by the founder and sole owner were examined. The filtered sample consisted of 308 firms. The firms’ profiles based on owners' and firms' age tended to be very similar. The findings point to the need for more current data on entrepreneurs in today’s uncertain economy, as well as empirical research on issues related to characteristics and motivations leading to entrepreneurship for both older and younger entrepreneurs.
