Abstract

The cutting-edge literature on censorship in authoritarian regime (e.g. King, Pan and Roberts 2013, 2014) is not invulnerable to shortcomings: • It assumes censorship to be an unidimensional struggle between a monolithic state and a public consisting of scattered individuals • It regards content generators as semi-passive • It draws mostly from social media • It focuses on China, an unrepresentative case This paper seeks to remedy these shortcomings by: • Uncovering divisions within the state and unisons within online media content generators in regard to content generation and censorship • Studying online newspapers, an area of organized content generators • Looking at Vietnam: similar to, but less technologically advanced than China in terms of censorship general approach: compare distributions of content and patterns of censorship across different content generators, test whether traditional “government vs. the public” division really holds.

Keywords: censor, vietnam, news, authoritarian, content generators, online content, government
