Abstract

English Abstract: This paper examines the significance of the variables which are used in predicting the defaults of saving institutions. Cox’s proportional hazard model, considered to be a complementary method to the dichotomous classification, has been used in making the predictions. The results for all the variables, except the loss weighted asset ratio, were shown to be consistent with the expected results. It was revealed that a 1% increase in the return on assets reduces the default ratio 0.68 times, a 1% increase in the operating income to equity capital reduces the default ratio 0.97 times and a 1% increase in the BIS capital ratio reduces the default ratio by 0.91 times.
