Abstract

In recent years, the number of older adults in the USA has been increased dramatically. This demographic is frequently referred to as “baby boomers” and it is estimated that by the year 2030 older adults will be composed of approximately of 20% of the U.S. population. This aging population will bring several challenges to the healthcare system. One of the concerns is substance abuse, particularly alcohol and prescription drugs. This paper presents an overview of substance abuse in older American adults. The prevalence of the problem as well as an association of the health risks and comorbidity are addressed. Furthermore, the challenges of screening and diagnosis among older adult is discussed. Finally, recommended treatments for substance abuse are presented.
