Why Do Muslims Cause So Much Violence/Terrorism? Myth and Reality

Abstract

In an exchange on a LinkedIn group forum, a participant from Israel raised a number of serious questions about why Muslims cause so much violence. Answering those questions requires organizing thoughts so that the articulation is sensible and substantive.

As a self-critical Muslim, the issues pertaining to such violence deeply bothers and agonizes this author. As a social scientist, with keen interest in history, this author has a deep interest in exploring and understanding the pertinent issues and identify potential ways to improve the situation. This paper is a summary of the historical background and factors that, in this author’s view, can help delineate and understand the situation better. The paper also addresses a number of important myths and misunderstandings.
