서비스 오프쇼링이 제조업에 미치는 영향: 한국을 대상으로 (Impacts of Service Offshoring on Productivity and Employment: Evidence from Korea)

Abstract

Korean Abstract: 본 연구는 1995~2005년 기간에 한국 제조업을 대상으로 서비스 오프쇼링(services offshoring)이 제조업의 생산성과 고용에 미치는 영향을 동태적 패널 데이터 분석 방법인 시스템 일반화적률법(system GMM)을 적용하여 분석하였다. 먼저 서비스 오프쇼링은 한국 제조업의 생산성 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 서비스 오프쇼링이 제조업의 전체 고용에는 유의한 영향을 미친다는 증거를 발견하지 못했다. 서비스 오프쇼링이 이질적(heterogenous) 노동에 미치는 영향은 서로 상이할 수 있다는 점을 살펴보기 위해 고용을 생산직과 사무직으로 구분하여 분석하였다. 전통적 무역이론의 예측과는 달리 서비스 오프쇼링은 사무직의 고용을 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 반해 생산직 고용에 미치는 영향은 유의하지 않았다. 마지막으로 제조업의 중간재 오프쇼링(material offshoring)은 생산직 고용의 감소와 유의한 관계를 맺고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

English Abstract: This paper estimates the effects of service offshoring on productivity and employment in Korean manufacturing industries during the period from 1995 to 2005. It applies a dynamic panel approach to address the potential endogeneity problem. We find that service offshoring has a significant positive impact of productivity, but no significant effects on total employment. Considering that the responses of heterogeneous labor to service offshoring may be different, we separately estimate the impacts of service offshoring on white-collar and blue-collar employment. The empirical results show that service offshoring raises white-collar employment, but has no significant effects on blue-collar employment. Finally, we find that material offshoring lowers blue-collar employment.
