서비스 교역과 경제성장 (Trade in Services and Economic Growth)

Abstract

Korean Abstract: 본 연구의 목적은 최근 국제교역에서 비중이 날로 증가하고 있는 서비스 교역이 경제성장에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 데 있으며, 이를 위해 1980~2000년 OECD 국가를 대상으로 동태패널 분석방법(dynamic panel approach)을 이용하였다. 분석결과 서비스 교역 증가율은 경제성장에 긍정적이고 유의미한 영향을 미치고, 또한 GDP 대비 수입으로 측정한 서비스 개방수준(openness level)이 높을수록 경제성장률이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이에 반해 제조업의 개방수준은 경제성장률에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 선진국을 대상으로 한 이러한 분석결과는 경제성장을 촉진하는 개방의 원천이 제조업에서 서비스 부문으로 이동하고 있다는 것을 시사한다. 아울러 서비스 부문의 개방속도(changes in openness)보다는 개방수준이 경제성장에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 점진적이고 지속적으로 개방수준을 높임으로써 경제성장이 가속화될 수 있다는 것을 시사한다. 고령화 사회로의 진입과 성장잠재력의 저하라는 문제에 직면한 한국이 선진국으로 진입하기 위해서는 서비스 개방을 통해 경쟁적 요소를 도입함으로써 서비스 산업의 효율성을 제고하고 경제성장을 가속화할 필요가 있다.

English Abstract: Services account for a large share of output in developed countries and international trade in services has been rapidly increasing since 1980. However, there are a limited number of empirical studies on the relationship between openness in services trade and economic growth. This paper applies a dynamic panel approach to examine the impacts of trade in services and openness on economic growth for industrialized countries during the period 1980-2000. The findings show that imports of services have a significant positive impact on economic growth. Furthermore, empirical results suggest that the level of openness in services (measured by imports to GDP) also affects growth, and not just changes in openness.
