Abstract
This article sets the stage for examining operations management research opportunities in the emerging industry that involves operations in outer space. Currently, space exploration is moving in new and exciting directions, thanks to private investment and a more collaborative, commercial industry structure. While we do not yet know if space will be the next big industry, we make the case that the potential is certainly there. In this paper, we outline the challenges presented within the “space industry” and highlight opportunities for operations management researchers in three categories – manufacturing operations, supply chain management, and sustainable operations. We also outline important questions related to stakeholder decisions and needs.
