Abstract
This work examines the nature of widowhood rites from three dimensions of gender inequality namely, discrimination, exploitation and oppression. Making reference to the legal and institutional framework for the protection of widows in Nigeria, it finds that the practices of widowhood rites derogate from the human and constitutional rights of women under domestic and international legal order. The paper proposes a socio- legal approach to the eradication of the ills of widowhood practices.
