Abstract

Globalization paved the way for the establishment of the English language as the world’s lingua franca. Now, the demand to learn English is enormous and various organizations are joining the language institutions to provide their own distinct brand of ESL education. By observing and conducting interviews in both church-based and language institute-based ESL classes, the researcher was able to gather data vital to determine the pedagogic practices that exists in both contexts. By comparing the similarities and identifying the differences in classroom practices, this study unraveled specific classroom conventions innate in religious and secular ESL classes to benefit English learning in general.
