Abstract

The AJAL theme consists of four articles on the theme of money politics in the Asia Pacific: Neri Colmenares on the Philippines; Edmund Terence Gomez and Joseph Tong on Malaysia; Lesley Clark and Grant Walton on Papua New Guinea; and Denny Indrayana on Indonesia. The articles serve as a reminder that the machinery for popular elections alone is not sufficient for democratic elections. Self-government and free and fair elections require much more by way of robust frameworks, particularly, the democratic regulation of political money.
