Abstract

The use of substance abuse among the youth is one of the major problems confronting the community. This study sought to investigate into the effects of drugs on the youth. The study involved sample population of 279 respondents who were selected through the use of the probability sampling technique. Pertaining to the causes and effects of drug use by the youth, the study revealed that peer influence was the major cause and the fact that most people initiated drug abuse at a very early age. The study revealed far reaching factors propelling drug abuse, types of drugs commonly abused and the effects of alcohol abuse among the youth. Peer influence was indeed the major cause and the fact that most people initiated drug abuse at a very early age. The most commonly abused drug was found to be Cannabis, popularly known as “Indian hemp” or “wee.” The overwhelming effect of drug abuse on the youth was poor academic performance of students.
