Abstract

In his paper, "That Man Is You!" The Juristic Person and Faithful Love, Professor Scott FitzGibbon tells the story of King David, Bathsheba, and Uriah, and describes Nathan's parable of a rich man who takes away a poor man's only lamb. When David condemns the rich man to death, Nathan responds, "That man is you." Professor FitzGibbon then discusses the reflexive good of duty, explaining that people who make a choice and act on that choice transform themselves for better or worse.

Next, he explores love and its relation to obligation: first erotic love, which discourages obligation, and then agape love. Agape love includes values, respect, admiration, caring, giving, and self-sacrifice. Like obligation, love can convert and ennoble.

In the last section of his article, Professor FitzGibbon returns to the story of King David and David's actions as a king and judge, reminding judges and those who develop family law that their laws can affect each person's household, children, and marriage.

Keywords: family law, reflexive good of duty, obligation
