Abstract
The role of social enterprises and their development in contemporary society is recently discussed through the perspectives set in the EU strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. Current paper makes a review of different forms and types of social enterprises outlining the main characteristics and impacts of their functioning on social and economic development. It presents the statistical data available for Bulgaria and provides conclusions and recommendations on how the social entrepreneurship in the country should be encouraged. The specific accent is put on the establishment of a sustainable partnership between state, business and ngos targeted to the achievement of socially significant objectives and added value.
