Abstract

Twenty four new cities have been established in Egypt since 1977. Most of these cities are facing economic, social and environmental challenges. Moreover, they have not yet achieved their targets due to the lack of comprehensive integrated development approach.

This has prompted the Egyptian authorities to develop plans and adopt policies to deal with these challenges. Housing represents the main national projects in these new cities. CAPMAS report (2016) on housing showed that public expenditure in the housing sector amounted to 41.7%. The report mentioned that the number of housing units constructed in Egypt during the past five years is 1.2 million, with investments up to EGP 109.6 billion. Taking into consideration that in 2015, 52% of electricity consumption is used by residential sector comparing to 47% in 2010. This should lead to a real paradigm shift in urban planning and buildings design in order to achieve Egypt’s vision 2030 breaking away from the conventional patterns of urban development.

This paper will present the challenges facing new cities and exploring the current housing projects in order to propose an approach for Egyptian sustainable cities. This approach will be dedicated for the existing new as well as for the intended new cities.
