Abstract

Energy plays a vital role in the development of any nation. Recycling and utilization have become major concerns of the developing nation. The goal of the project is to utilize banana waste for the production of bioethanol by using the yeast Saccharomyce scerevisiae. Three main agricultural wastes of banana crops of pseudo stem, rachis and banana peels were taken for saccharification and fermentation processes. The wastes were taken as two different methods for bioethanol production in order attain suitable conditions which are transferable to industry (optimizing resources and time). The waste raw material was pretreated initially with HCl to breakdown the lignin content after which hydrolysis using thermamyl (α-amylase) and amyloglucosidase was carried out. In order to optimize the yield of bioethanol, the operating conditions were followed strictly. The α-amylase operating condition was maintained at a temperature range of 90-100°C, pH of 4.5 and 0.1% enzyme concentration while the activity of amyloglucosidase was maintained 50-60°C and pH of 4.5. The amount of reducing sugar obtained after saccharification was 18% which was diluted to 11% to enable the yeast cells act on it. After fermentation, the ethanol in solution was distilled and 87ml distillate obtained which gave 56% ethanol using the specific gravity table.

Keywords: fermentation, thermamyl
