재벌총수의 자신감이 소속 기업의 재무의사결정에 미치는 영향 연구: 텍스트마이닝과 패널분석 기법을 이용하여 (The Effects of CEO Confidence on Corporate Financial Decision Makings in Korean Chaebols: Using Text Mining and Panel Analysis)

Abstract

Korean Abstract: 혁신적인 경영자에게 자신감은 중요한 요소이지만, 경영자의 자신감이 지나쳐 자기과신으로 이어질 경우 오히려 합리적인 기업 재무의사결정을 저해하는 요인으로 작용할 수 있다. 그간 행태재무에 대한 국내외 선행 연구는 각 기업의 최고 경영자로 전문경영인(CEO)을 대상으로 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 하지만 국내기업의 경우 재벌총수가 실질적인 기업의 의사결정을 수행하는 경우가 많아 전문경영인을 최고경영자로 정의할 경우 실질적인 기업의 의사결정 책임자에 대한 연구로서 의미가 떨어질 수 있기 때문에, 본 연구는 재벌총수를 대상으로 자신감이 재무의사결정과 재무성과에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 우선 국내 재벌총수 및 기업에 대한 미디어 기사를 텍스트마이닝 기법으로 분석하여 재벌총수의 자신감을 계량화된 변수로 측정하였다. 이후 측정된 자신감 대용변수를 패널 모형에 설명변수로 활용하여 주요 재무지표와의 관계를 계량적으로 실증 분석하였다. 연구결과, 자신감이 높은 재벌총수는 부채 등의 자본을 추가적으로 조달하여 투자를 확대하는 적극적인 재무의사결정을 수행한다는 가설을 지지한 반면, 성장가치(토빈Q)와 수익성 지표의 경우 시차를 두고 음(-)의 관계가 산출되었다. 이는 경영자의 지나친 자신감은 자기 과신으로 작용하여 기업가치 및 재무성과에 악영향을 초래할 수 있음을 지지하는 결과이다.

English Abstract: Confidence of CEO is an important factor, but over-confidence of CEO can result in adverse effects on corporate financial decision makings. The study aims to analyze the impact of CEO confidence on corporate financial decisions and financial performance in Korean Chaebols. First, we measure ‘CEO confidence’ by analyzing media articles about both CEOs and corporations of Korean Chaebols with a text mining technique. Second, we use the CEO confidence as an explanatory variable in panel regression model to analyze its effects on key financial variables. We find the results supporting the hypothesis that CEOs with higher confidence in Korean Chaebols make active financial decisions to expand investments. In addition, we find that debt ratio also rises when CEOs show a higher confidence if previous (t-1) debt level is included as an independent variable. On the other hand, we find that future value of growth opportunity (Tobin's Q) and profitability (both are one year ahead) will deteriorate when CEOs show a higher confidence.
