Abstract

The contents of this textbook are about comprehensive stories and arguments of the current challenges in handling our natural resource scarcity and environmental pollution for seeking prompt strategies to create a long-term sustainability of our earth planet. This book also states that our global natural resources were threatened to lose their security because of overpopulation, overexploitation, and overconsumption, including the recurring of pollution and poor decision-making together uneven of unsustainable practices in environmental governance. The needs of well-cooperation in social and environmental responsibilities among key stakeholders (e.g. government, investors, institutions, business enterprises and local communities) are the fundamental element of social and environmental sustainability. Thus, these key stakeholders have to be involved as collaborative works especially in the initiatives of conservation and environmental protection, at multiple levels (local, regional, national and global). Contents of each chapter provide the explanation of all abovementioned key stakeholders about their roles and responsibilities in environmental management with various case studies. The uses of this textbook will be a suit and useful to worldwide academia and use as a good reference for policy-makers, politicians, and practitioners to support the sustainable practices for protecting natural resources and conducting conservation initiatives.

However, the current threats to natural resource security caused by the climate changes have increased the complexity of environmental governance systems and related problems. Thus, all environmental impacts can be considered as the nexus and conundrum problems and need to be understood for lessening the consequences. Regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the global sustainability has become a central focus of current sustainable development which requires innovative and sustainable management strategies to protect the existing natural resource. Chapter 1 provides the interconnection of nexus and relevance factors and key stakeholders in relation to the SDGs achievement. For Chapter 2, this book provides an in-depth explanation of the roles and responsibilities of governments and related institutes with a range topic of environmental impact assessment and related procurements of environmental management around the world as a part of multi-level and multifarious efforts.

Chapter 3 of this book focuses on the role of the Development Financial Institutions (DFIs) and the Private Sector Financing Institutions (PSFIs) through an exclusive explanation. This chapter also includes the description of the designed framework of World Bank and other international financial corporation as the examples of the involvement in environmental sustainability. Chapter 4 and 5 provides the information of how business enterprises handle their sustainability to meet their own achievement in terms of compliance and competitiveness and their sustainability in stock exchanges and impact in the investment. So, the many examples of these three chapters offer various interesting points to the readers.

Chapter 4 and 5 illustrates the roles of several kinds of businesses looks at their sustainability and explains the concepts and management tools such as Life Cycle Thinking, Ecolabels, Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001), and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as well as how the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can be used for their environmental management and assessment, including various examples for the readers. Finally, Chapter 6 provides an explanation of the important roles of local communities especially for the participatory environmental monitoring to increase the sustainability of their societies and natural resources. Thus, this book serves as a valuable textbook for this era in terms of the creation of global sustainability to overcome the current environmental challenges.
