Using the City as an Innovation Playground: Getting Corporations into the Game

Abstract

Creativity and innovation are the Holy Grail of business success that supercharge any kind of organisations from corporates to start-ups and shift them towards growth. Leaders are aware that when it comes to innovation they must act quickly, invest in more and more resources, and implement methods and tools that help employees become as creative, collaborate, productive and high-performing as possible to strengthen the organisation’s capacity to innovate. To stay alive in the innovation game, organisations need to curate experience and connect spaces with people and productivity. Outdated approaches to innovation do not succeed anymore, as the open innovation theory says, great ideas can come from anywhere. One recent trend we can observe in buzzing cities is that corporates are partnering up with coworking spaces to enhance collaboration, increase productivity and creativity, attract the best talent, and optimise space utilization. Such spaces are shared spaces for mutual support, efficiency, and potentially serendipitous interaction where typical inhabitants are entrepreneurs, freelancers and start-ups. Moving the whole team to work in a coworking space is just one solution how corporates can benefit from the coworking culture. Another, less radical but potentially even more effective option is temporarily moving a team to a coworking space for a fully facilitated ‘bootcamp’ to inject creativity and innovation into a concrete department or project. The present article discusses different options of corporate-coworking interaction with the aim of exploring whether such partnerships really have the potential to stir up the urban innovation landscape.
