Abstract

The College of Industrial Technology has the highest electrical consumption among colleges at the Bulacan State University. The nature of its course offerings is the reason for this scenario, but the occupants must not be contented to this fact and believe that he/she cannot contribute to the solution of this problem. The study aims to create a level of awareness among staffs and employees of the college regarding the amount of power consumed by their own department. Level of awareness for our consumed power is an important aspect in conserving electricity. This is through Behavioral intervention saying “If you don’t Need It, Don’t use It” (Masoso, 2009). Based from the Department of Energy (DOE) regarding energy savings on stand-by mode television power, a 1-watt of electricity saved if multiplies to 1 million users is already a megawatt of power save. Another Intervention that will definitely reduce electrical consumption is through Technical intervention such as the use of low-power consuming devices and controlled lighting systems. The study made an inventory of lighting and ventilation devices within the college and listed all its electrical consumption. Machines are not included in the study for their varying time of use might hard to quantify its total electrical consumption. Another reason is the unavailability of data due to confidentiality imposed by some staffs and faculty. The number of hours of consumption is based from the room utilizations provided by the CIT office. The study shows a considerable savings in electricity if all the occupants turn-off the lighting system during noon-break amounting to 12.295 KW-hr per week savings. Another significant savings is through the use of Tube type LED consuming only 16 watts as compare to the existing 25 watts lightings, the amount of saving is 277.308 KW-hr per week. The major savings will be due to utilization of inverter-type air-conditioning that will save 30% of electricity quantifying to 1591.152 KW-hr per week savings. The total savings for all the interventions amounts to 1881.39kW-hr per week, this is approximately P80,000 pesos savings per month. The study also observed other technological issues that might save electricity like the proper selection of consumption of air-conditioning base from the dimension of the rooms are not yet quantified the wasted energy. Another technical intervention which is also not quantified is by using light sensors and Passive-Infrared sensors that monitors the activity and presence of human in a room.
