Abstract

This 2008 article (which originally ran in the Autumn 2008 Parameters) considers the security implications of a large-scale turn to nuclear power as a substitute for fossil fuels, with a focus on the nuclear proliferation risk inside an international scene disrupted by energy and resource stress. After assessing this danger it then argues that the U.S. should actively discourage such a turn through the promotion of renewable energy, while also supporting the research of Generation IV nuclear power production holding out the prospect of sharply reduced proliferation risks (among other benefits).
