Abstract

This paper explores the production of sacred space(s) situated in one of Chennai’s hubs of religious and spiritual insignias and icons- Mylapore. Visits to Mylapore’s religious and spiritual landmarks served as my primary method of collecting data. As a resident of Mylapore, I also draw on my own observations of spatial practices, that infuse sacredness, and interactions with people, both residents and non-residents. Existing literature on spatiality and the production of dichotomous relations between the sacred and the profane provides me with frameworks to study the same. Such understandings contain key implications for urban planning study and practice.
