Abstract
This paper looks at the build up of coal reliance and the resulting increase in unemployment in the Appalachian region. It notes that the region relies on coal production for its economy. By comparing to other states and countries that have moved beyond the natural resource curse, Appalachian states can create policies that foster economic development within the region. Encouraging development will help the region move beyond its reliance on coal production and into a world of renewable resources.
