Abstract
This paper assesses the EU’s performance in carrying out its self-imposed objective of contributing to ‘the strict observance and development of international law’. It thereto analyses how the EU organizes itself with regard to the statements delivered in the Sixth Committee and with regard to the development of draft resolutions to be put before the UN General Assembly (UNGA) plenary. The practice and content of those statements and draft resolutions, which partly result from the consensual nature of the UNGA’s Sixth Committee, make it difficult for the EU to display innovative leadership in that particular forum. The paper also calls for a more consistent approach between EU institutions, with a more convergent attitude towards international law.
