Abstract
The use of robotic process automation (RPA) helps organisations to automate business processes in a relatively short amount of time. Successfully implementing RPA requires an appropriate organisational and technical infrastructure, long-term vision when evaluating its costs and benefits, and technical quality standards. We list the most common types of software robots and present technical concepts how to build configurable and robust robots that lead to lower development and maintenance costs. In particular, we focus on exception handling, work queue and data management strategies to increase the robustness of robots while they interact with external applications and experience environment instabilities.
