Abstract

The public impact of planetary science, or, alternatively, the public value of planetary science, is poorly understood, as little research has been published on the subject. Some notable public impacts of planetary science are an understanding of planetary (and climate) evolution, a deeper understanding of the boundaries of life and habitability, a changing view of the place of Earth and Earth life in the solar system, and an aesthetic, philosophical, and spiritual appreciation of the planets.

Keywords: science communication, public understanding of science, public engagement
