Abstract

Understanding the costs of road construction, road maintenance and vehicle operation is essential to sound planning and management of road investments. While the infrastructure costs borne by road agencies are substantial, the costs borne by road users are even greater. Vehicle operating costs includes costs of fuel, oil, tyres, maintenance and repairs, etc for the different classes of vehicles. The purpose of this study was to determine the vehicle operating costs for different classes of vehicle in two different stretch of roads. Also, how the vehicle operating costs varies due to the condition of the roads, as better highway conditions results in reduction of vehicle operating costs. In this study, different types of surveys were carried out and the data obtained from the survey was used to calculate vehicle operating costs from the equations obtained from Updation of Road User costs Study IRC SP Model.
