Abstract

Readily availability, cheaper in cost, self-lubricating in nature, less maintenance requirement, even pressure generation, better damping characteristics etc. are the advantages in using a porous pad in a gas-lubricated journal bearing which results in efficient working of the journal bearing. The performance of a porous journal bearing which suffers in terms of its strength can be modified by using a porous pad of two layers. In this paper, a journal bearing with double porous layer has been analyzed using the short bearing approximation to finding out the expressions of pressure distribution, the attitude angle, load carrying capacity, stiffness and the coefficient of friction.
