Чије су арапске цифре (Who Invented the Arabic Numerals)

Abstract

Serbian Abstract: У раду се разматра проблем настанка савремених, „арапских”, цифара, који се у прихваћеној историји науке смешта у Индију и датира годинама не после 5. века. Указује се на сложеност проблема, и на велики број хипотеза и теорија које су настале и још увек циркулишу у научном, и не само научном, свету, укључујући и неисторијске и ненаучне. Дат је кратак преглед савремених цифарских система, укључујући и оне који се користе у арапском и индијском свету, као и основних алфавитних система који су претходили позиционим системима, пре свега десетном. Посебно се истичу теорије настанка савременог десетног позиционог система с „арапским” цифрама из словенско-грчког алфавитног система, укључујући промене самих цифара током времена, а што је илустровано делима старих сликарских мајстора. Иако за сада недоказане, али и неоповргнуте, ове теорије, а пре свега хипотеза Нове хронологије о старословенском пореклу „арапских” цифара, веома су интересантне и инспиративне. Као уосталом и све хипотезе Нове хронологије, којима се многе устаљене историјске „истине” доведене у питање.

English Abstract: The paper considers the issue of the origin of the contemporary, so called Arabic numerals, which according to the mainstream history of science originated in no later than the fifth century’s India. It points out the complexity of the issue and a large number of hypotheses and theories that were constructed and are still present in the scientific and not only scientific world, including some non-historic and non-scientific ones. It presents an overview of the contemporary numeral systems, including those used in the Arab and Indian world, as well as the main alphabetic numeral systems, which preceded the positional systems, with an emphasis on the decimal one. Especially important are theories of the Slavic-Greek alphabetic system as the origin of contemporary decimal positional system, as well as the change of the numerals over time, which was illustrated by the works of the old painting masters. Even though they have not been proven nor refuted so far, these theories are very interesting and inspiring, especially the hypothesis of the New Chronology about the Ancient Slavic origin of Arabic numerals; just like all New Chronology hypotheses, which have put into question many of the established historic “truths”.
