Abstract

English Abstract:This paper proposes the thesis that in Dürer's famous watercolour and gouache painting W.248 (Young Hare) only the head with neck and ears and the signature (1502 AD) were painted by Dürer himself. The hare's body and legs were added by some other artist. This thesis is based mainly on the following three observations:

1. With regards to workmanship, skillfulness, and mastery, the forelegs of the hare are the weakest part of the painting. They are not as elegant as the rest of the painting. And the forelegs show a slight deviation from the axis of the hare's body. They are subtly shifted upwards in order to keep a minimum distance to Dürer's original signature, otherwise they would have been easily recognized as a later addition.

2. Dürer's signet is not well positioned on the sheet of paper. If somebody was to put his signature under the complete animal with body and legs, they would not have chosen a spot so close between the forelegs and the lower edge of the paper. On a photo where body and legs of the hare have been cut out, Dürers signature sits in perfectly centred harmony with the head of the hare.

3. In terms of brilliance, power, and ingeniousness in how the fur of the hare is depicted, two parts can be distinguished: an original part by Dürer himself (head with neck and ears, and the signature) and a later completed part (body and legs).
