Abstract

According to the United Nations, poverty is the inability of having choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity. It means lack of basic capacity to participate effectively in society It means not having enough to feed and clothe a family, not having a school or clinic to go to, not having the land on which to grow one’s food or a job to earn one’s living, not having access to credit. It means insecurity, powerlessness and exclusion of individuals, households and communities. It means susceptibility to violence, and it often implies living in marginal or fragile environment, without access to clean water or sanitation. Generally speaking, poverty connotes the inability to command basic necessity of life. This paper intends to discuss the place of poverty in our quest to protect or conserve our environment. It will also show that because poverty is the order of the day in Nigeria, it will be difficult if not impossible for the environment to be given the kind of protection it requires. Sustainable development holds at its centre an approach to development that looks to the balance different, and often competing needs against an awareness of the environment, social and economic limitations of a nation. Available literature about the subject matter will be reviewed with particular interest in the causes of poverty, attempts to eradicate it, Conserve our environment and thus bring about sustainable development. In all we suggest among others that government, decision makers and a wide range of others should manage the economy and the environment in a way that improves livelihood and leads to sustainable development.
