Abstract

The professional and technical requirements imposed on engineers who perform structural condition analysis of existing buildings, including designated structures as defined in the Building Code Act, 1992. Structural condition analyses of existing buildings are to be methodical, scientific investigations with clearly defined objectives, carried out with sufficient rigor to provide reliable findings. The structural condition analysis objectives are to be based on the particular circumstances that cause the analysis to be required. This paper presents an evaluation of the structural condition and retrofit of reinforced concrete columns of an existing building. A preliminary inspection and extensive investigation have been conducted to assess the geometrical and material quality of the existing structural elements. Based on the present assessed structural characteristics, structural analysis has been carried out to find the optimal number of stories, taking into consideration the revised imposed loads on the structure. Retrofit of columns was proposed where higher punching stress was encountered in the initial foundation. The study has shown that the foundation resistance has been highly enhanced.
