Abstract

While centering on the merged campus and community polities of Austin, this analysis has applicability to other cities with shared characteristics – “mind magnets” that attract young, educated, social and environmental progressives, such as Raleigh-Durham and Portland. Given its demographics and history, however, Austin, home to the University of Texas (UT-Austin), can be considered a “bellwether” among creative class cities – one of Brooks’ prototypical “latte towns” along with Boulder, CO and Seattle, WA.

Keywords: higher education, diversity, equity, inclusion, faculty of color, US higher education
