Abstract

Domestic tourism is an important segment of tourism business of any nation. It is grossly underestimated because of logistic and absence of a proper information management system. In Indian context, domestic tourism plays a key role and huge inflow of domestic tourists can be seen at popular destinations. This paper is an attempt to understand the main thread of domestic tourism in India, i.e. pilgrimage tourism. Religious trips hold the lion market share of domestic tourism in Indian market. This paper discusses the coexistence of religion with tourism, its impacts (positive) at various levels and how it co exists in a plural community taking Varanasi as a case study.
