Abstract

The cryogenic treatment could be useful to prevent the premature failure of AISI H13 steel forging dies which are continuously under the action of mechanical stresses and temperature. This work involves heating H13 die steel specimens to 1020°C, quenching in oil followed by double tempering at 520°C for two hours and then subjecting these specimens to cryogenic treatment at minus185°C with different cryosoaking periods starting from 8 hours to 32 hours. The dry sliding wear tests were performed at room temperature on the pin-on- disc wear testing machine at selected testing parameters of 40N load, 3 m/s speed and 6000 m sliding distance. The hardness, carbide density, particle size measurements and microstructural analysis were carried out for H13 specimens. It has been established that the decreased carbide particle size due to cryogenic treatment assists in the reduction in the material flow which was corroborated by the decrease in the wear coefficient for H13 die steel by almost 51% as compared to the conventionally treated specimens. This outcome was supported by the application of equation of phase transformation.
