Abstract

A life in the law involves at least some experience with the ugliness as well as the loveliness of humanity. Popular portrayals of the law and lawyers have always tended to highlight, and exaggerate, the extremes of that experience — and in days gone by almanacs of the sorts reproduced in this volume were very popular. (Indeed, pre-20th-century almanacs were, in some respects, analogous to both Google and Facebook today: they were the universally used go-to resources for useful information... and for confirmation of one’s own prejudices).

Keywords: Anti-Slavery, Crockett, Rough and Ready, Wiegand, librarian
