Abstract

The work environment can be gender integrated or non-gender integrated, while males and females pack out books inside a library. 42 men and 36 women were interviewed to determine their feelings about gender integrated and non-gender integrated work environments, in which, males and females pack out books inside a library. Their responses were coded, using the Coding Rubric for Expectancy Violation. The results indicated significant relationships between sex and expectancy violation for the three work environments: (a) male only, (b) female only, and (c) both males and females. When male and female workers pack out books inside a library, men and women favor masculine/masculinity traits in a non-gender integrated work environment, but men and women do not favor either feminine/femininity or masculine/masculinity traits in a gender integrated work environment.
