Abstract

MANET is abbreviated as Mobile Ad-Hoc Network, which is a network of mobile devices without any fixed structure (routes). MANET contents nodes with different configuration that communicates with one another without centralized controller or coordinator of the system and every mobile node has limitation of battery power. It is an infrastructure less network having different routing protocols for optimal route selection for efficient communication. MANET has two types of routing protocol for smoother flow of message in network. First is proactive and another is reactive routing protocol. Optimized link state routing protocol (OLSR) is one of the proactive routing protocols in MANET, which selects the multipoint relays (MPRs) for communication. MPRs means multipoint relays and these nodes are selected for communication of the messages. In OLSR protocol, MPR nodes consume more battery power than non-MPR nodes due of this reason, MPR node run out their battery power. In this paper we have discussed MPR selection approach and integrating routing metrics with multilayer parameters, such as residual energy and node location in routing decision scheme to reduce energy consumption and improve network lifetime of MPR. Each node maintains a routing table with the best two paths; the first path contains the lowest weighting factor of MPR and second path contains the second lowest weighting factor of MPR. If any link will go down then router immediately get the second path with another MPR. So during failure of link there is no need to calculate residual energy and no need to execute algorithm again. Thus here it saves energy and time. The survey is aimed to study the enhancement of the optimized link state routing protocol with better route selection strategy such as hybrid multipath scheduling with energy aware MPR selection process, to save network energy and improve network lifetime which in turn improve the performance of OLSR protocol.
