Abstract
The development of clinical pedagogy in Israeli law schools reflects the evolution of legal culture and legal education in Israel. By reviewing the history of Israeli legal clinics, the dilemmas concerning the desired educational goals are exposed and discussed. Then, a survey of the current clinical legal programs in Israel is presented from four perspectives: administrating legal clinics; student participation; the clinical staff; and the status of clinical pedagogy in the legal curriculum. Three examples of clinical practices are then detailed, demonstrating current trends in Israeli clinical legal education. In light of the empirical data presented, this chapter discusses the challenges of clinical legal education in Israel. These challenges include institutional concerns; sociological implications; and ethical consequences. Finally, this chapter offers suggestions for constructive implementation of this unique pedagogy.
