Abstract

At the age of five William Fullarton of Fullarton inherited substantial estates in Ayrshire, which he held until he was fifty-one, shortly after the death of his mother. He was educated in Edinburgh and on a grand tour, unusually extended to Sicily and Malta, before joining the British Embassy as a secretary until the outbreak of war. He next turned to Whig politics before proposing an ambitious plan to attack the Pacific coast of the Spanish Empire in South America. Having raised a regiment for this he was diverted to India, where he campaigned successfully. He returned to Great Britain managing his estates, marrying and being elected to parliament. Appointed to lead three commissioners to govern Trinidad he investigated the previous use of torture by another commissioner, before to returning to seek his prosecution. Like his father, Fullarton died prematurely.
