Abstract

In this article attempt has been made to explore the possibilities, whereby libraries in the future can seek out ways and means to self'-sustain by generating revenue from their own resources and services. In each era, library of whatsoever nature, institution or organization lived with a tag of being a non-profit making institution and as such, were looked down upon by the society at large as the dependent and parasitic institutions, which rely heavily on their parent institutions for their survival and sustenance. The transformation of' society is taking place at such a larger pace that Libraries, which were once rated as a real asset of an institution or an organization are now-a-days being seen as a liability. Thereon, in the race of survival of' the fittest, no institution can afford to have a parasitic nature and to meet the basic minimum requirements to serve their clientele in a more sustainable and effective way, libraries of the modem day are somewhat bound to generate revenue from their own resources & services. Accordingly, the present discourse lasts around the ways and means, whereby libraries can exploit their own resources and services in fine-tuning their financial health, which can help libraries to move from non-profit making to self-sustaining and from self-sustaining to profit making institution. An attempt has also been made to identify those areas, which can help libraries to start a new journey at their own for not just to survive, but also to thrive.
