Abstract

In the last decades, Italian exporters have undertaken a process of quality upgrading of productions, which has translated into higher average unit values of output. As a result, the Italian pricing power in foreign markets has improved relative to other European countries, including Germany. The benefits of the quality upgrading strategy have not been evenly distributed across markets and industries, though. Industrial policies aimed at further improving the global competitiveness of Italian industry are urgently needed. These issues are analyzed in detail in the paper.
